By virtue of our baptism, we are called to bring the good news – the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to the world around us. Pope Francis reminds us often of this baptismal call to missionary discipleship. For us, this call is a clear echo of the invitation Jesus made to a small group of ordinary fishermen two-thousand years ago, when he said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men (Matthew 4:19)”.
As missionaries we are called to fish. Just as Jesus told Simon (Peter) to “put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch (Luke 5:4), Jesus calls each of us, daily, to take courage, and trust him, just like Peter did, and cast our nets in both ordinary and unexpected places.
As disciples, we understand that to fish well, we ourselves must first, and repeatedly be “caught” – captured by the steadfast love of Jesus Christ. Every time he speaks to us through scripture, renews and guides us in prayer, extends his loving mercy to us in confession, captures us with his loving gaze during adoration, greets us in the poor and the outcast, and nourishes us at the Mass with his greatest gift of all – the Eucharist, we are reminded of this profound call to discipleship. Each of these encounters with Jesus is meant to change us, as well as further prepare and equip us to respond to his call to be disciples on mission – to be fishers of men and women.
In July of 2024, more than 60,000 pilgrims from across the country gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana for the 10th National Eucharistic Congress. The congress marked the transition to the third year of the National Eucharistic Revival – The Year of Mission – a year where Catholics are called to “boldly (spread) the Good News of Christ’s Eucharistic love and mercy in word and deed”. Coinciding with the Year of Mission, Bishop Andrew Cozzens released his pastoral vision for the Diocese of Crookston – New Life: Through the Tender Compassion of God. In his letter, Bishop Cozzens lights the path that will guide and equip Catholics in the Diocese of Crookston to be able to “share with others in many different ways the incredible good news of the gift of life and salvation we have received in Jesus.”
These are very exciting times to be Catholics called on mission. The Diocese of Crookston Youth Conference is an invitation to youth from across the diocese to take up this call.
The day will be filled with many excellent, passionate speakers, including Bishop Andrew Cozzens, Brian Greenfield, Sister Elfie Del Rosario, FMA, Father Bryan Kujawa, Hope Bach, and the Bethany House Missionaries. The Jon Martin Band will lead us with music, praise and worship throughout the day, including adoration and Mass.
DCYC 2024 will also include interactive games and activities, and opportunities to meet other young Catholics from across the diocese.
